UConn title a win for books by The Gaming Today’s Mark Mayer

Not only did Connecticut take care of Butler to win the national championship Monday night, but they made Las Vegas sports books a nice profit.

“The result was just fine,” said Mike Colbert, director of race and sports operations at Cantor Gaming. “There was a lot of public support for Butler at our properties (M, Hard Rock, Cosmopolitan), but Connecticut was the better team.”

The 53-41 final was one of the lowest in NCAA history, making the UNDER an absolute breeze for those who bet the total would not exceed 131. The Huskies were a 3-point favorite at tipoff.

“It was a satisfying result for us,” Colbert said. “What would really have hurt was if VCU had gone all the way. There were futures tickets out there at 100-1 that a lot of people took when VCU reached the Sweet 16.”

The 2012 college basketball futures odds will be coming out within a week at both Cantor and the Las Vegas Hilton.

As for this week’s Masters at Augusta National, Colbert said betting has been active.

“It’s the first time I can ever remember Tiger Woods not being the favorite,” he said. “At 10-1 odds, I can be very tempted to take him. But (Phil) Mickelson deserves to be favored off his three Masters titles.”

Mickelson became the 6-1 favorite after winning last week’s PGA Tour event Houston. He had not won a tournament since last year’s Masters and as of last week was second choice to Woods going into this year’s first major.
