Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) – Dave Rice has accepted the position as men’s head basketball coach at UNLV.
The school made the announcement on Sunday and will hold a press conference on Monday to formally welcome the former BYU associate head coach.
UNLV was looking to replace Lon Kruger, who resigned last week to take the reins at Oklahoma. Mike Dunlap, Ernie Kent and Reggie Theus were the other finalists for the position.
Rice, who played at UNLV from 1989-91, served as associate head coach at BYU from 2008-11 after a three-year stint as assistant head coach. He was also an assistant at UNLV for 11 years and Utah State for one.
He was a member of UNLV’s 1989-90 national championship team and was the school’s Rhodes Scholar candidate.
The Running’ Rebels went 24-9 last year and lost to Illinois in their first NCAA Tournament game.
