Report: Former Mets catcher Carter’s brain tumors likely malignant by The Sports Network

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who won a World Series with the New York Mets, likely has malignant tumors on his brain.

The New York Daily News, citing Carter’s family website, reported that Duke University doctors say they are ’90 percent’ certain that the tumors found on his brain are malignant. The doctors will not know the official diagnosis until next week, but feel the tumors may be treatable, even if malignant.

The newspaper said Carter is to begin chemotherapy and radiation as soon as the final test results are known.

The 57-year-old was diagnosed less than a week ago after experiencing headaches and forgetfulness.

The southern California native hit .262 with 324 home runs and 1,225 RBI in 2,296 games with the Expos, Mets, Dodgers and Giants from 1974-92. Though Carter spent a majority of his career with Montreal — and entered the Hall of Fame in 2003 as an Expo — Carter was a key component of the Mets’ 1986 World Series triumph.
