NFL permits player workouts, meetings with coaches by The Sports Network
New York, NY (Sports Network) – The National Football League has issued its clubs a series of guidelines in the aftermath of the recent court rulings that ended the lengthy lockout.
Beginning Friday morning, players will be permitted to use team facilities for workouts, physical examinations, rehab and medical treatment. Coaches can also meet with players to distribute playbooks, game film and other similar materials while setting up schedules for workouts, mini-camps and organized team activities (OTAs).
However, the league said procedures for player transactions, including free agent signings and trades, will likely be distributed Friday. The NFL also said it would likely have a time frame for the start of the 2011 league year.
The workouts and OTAs will be subject to rules of the 2006 collective bargaining agreement.
Of course, the league is still in the process of an appeal of the rulings from U.S. District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson, who lifted the lockout on Monday by granting the players’ request for an injunction and late Wednesday denied the NFL’s request for a stay of her ruling while the appeals process plays out.
The league has begun that process with an appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis.
Owners instituted the lockout after talks toward a new collective bargaining agreement broke down on March 11, the day the players disbanded their union. A group of players — including quarterbacks Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints — filed the injunction request along with an antitrust lawsuit against the league.
The NFL has maintained that the dispute will only end through collective bargaining. Discussions are scheduled to resume May 16.
