Johnny Cueto (2-1) surrendered three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in a five-inning start.

Final Score: New York 1, Washington 0

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – Dillon Gee had the best outing of his young career on Thursday afternoon, tossing 7 2/3 scoreless innings in the New York Mets’ 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. Gee (3-0) gave up just two hits to go with three walks and three strikeouts for the Mets, who came into this brief two-game series with zero shutouts on the season. New York changed that on Wednesday with a 3-0 victory in the opener of this set. Justin Turner drove in the lone run for the Mets, who got three hits from Jason Bay. Livan Hernandez (3-6) went seven innings in the start for the Nationals, allowing one run on seven hits. He also struck out seven and walked two in defeat.

Final Score: St. Louis 4, Houston 2

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – Gerald Laird had a two-run double to help back eight solid innings from Kyle McClellan, as the St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 4-2 win over Houston and completed a sweep of the brief two-game set at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with a solo home run for the Cardinals, who have won four in a row. McClellan (6-1) gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five without issuing a walk. Fernando Salas threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season. Carlos Lee had a sacrifice fly for Houston, which has lost five straight and has dropped 10 of its last 12 games overall. Humberto Quintero had two hits and scored the other Astros run on a wild pitch. J.A. Happ (3-5) went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walked three and struck out eight.

Final Score: Colorado 7, Philadelphia 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Jason Giambi homered three times and tied a career high with seven RBI to lead Colorado over the Phillies, 7-1, and a split of their two-game series. Giambi went deep in his first three at-bats to record the first three-homer game of his 17-season career. Jhoulys Chacin (5-2) earned the victory after allowing one run on four hits and a walk in seven innings. He also fanned nine to help give the Rockies their third win in four games. Kyle Kendrick (3-3) took the loss, lasting just three innings in a spot start. He allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two in Philadelphia’s fifth defeat in six games.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Florida 1

Mike Stanton’s home run accounted for the only run for the Marlins, who have lost three of four. Chris Volstad (2-3) was touched for three runs on four hits over five innings.

Final Score: Arizona 2, Atlanta 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) – Juan Miranda went 3-for-4 with the decisive RBI triple in the sixth inning, helping the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory and two- game series sweep against the Braves. Rookie Josh Collmenter (3-0), in his second career start, limited Atlanta to just two hits in six scoreless innings to grab the win. He has made nine total appearances this season and given up only two runs and one walk in 26 innings. Chris Young homered for Arizona, which has won three in a row and five of six. Jair Jurrjens (5-1) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings to take the loss, which is the Braves’ second since a four-game win streak.

Final Score: San Diego 1, Milwaukee 0

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) – The San Diego Padres were elated to see Orlando Hudson back in the lineup. Hudson, who was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list earlier on Thursday, delivered the game-winning RBI during the bottom of the ninth as the San Diego Padres edged the Milwaukee Brewers, 1-0, in a pitching duel. Padres starter Aaron Harang threw eight scoreless innings, allowing just six hits, but it was Heath Bell (2-0) who picked up the win, hurling a one-hit ninth as San Diego spilt the two-game series. Brewers starter Chris Narveson threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings with five hits in the hard-luck no-decision. Marco Estrada (1-2) gave up the lone run of the game to get the loss, Milwaukee’s second in three games.

Final Score: San Francisco 3, Los Angeles 1

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Madison Bumgarner was one out away from his first career shutout, but still picked up his first win of the season as the Giants held on to beat the Dodgers, 3-1. Jerry Sands’ two-out RBI double forced Bumgarner (1-6) out of the game in the ninth, and Giants closer Brian Wilson walked two to load the bases. Jamey Carroll nearly came through with sinking line drive to right field, but a shallow-playing Nate Schierholtz made a diving catch to seal the win. Bumgarner, who had been backed by 15 total runs over his first eight starts, gave up one run on six hits and two walks over 8 2/3 innings. The lefty also doubled and scored a run in the third. Freddy Sanchez drove in two for the Giants, who had lost three of four before taking both games in the short series. Chad Billingsley (2-4) suffered the loss — LA’s fifth in six games — after surrendering three runs on six hits and four walks in six frames.
