National League Game Capsules by The Sports Network

Final Score: Atlanta 3, Houston 1 (11 innings)

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) – Brian McCann hit a game-tying pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, then clubbed a game-winning two- run shot in the 11th, as the Atlanta Braves earned a 3-1 victory over the Astros to sweep a brief two-game set. Jeff Fulchino, (0-2) in for his second inning of relief, walked Eric Hinske with one out in the 11th before McCann jumped on a 1-0 changeup and launched it just inside the right-field foul pole. His blast made a winner of Cory Gearrin (1-1), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 11th. Martin Prado went 2-for-5 for the Braves, who have won four straight and five of their last six games overall. Brett Wallace hit a homer to account for the only offense for Houston, which has dropped three in a row and eight of 10.

Final Score: Colorado 5, San Francisco 3

Denver, CO (Sports Network) – Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run single in a four- run eighth to help the Colorado Rockies take a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants and sweep a two-game set. Dexter Fowler drove in a run in the eighth and Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo home run for the Rockies, who came into the set having dropped four of five. Ubaldo Jimenez gave up three runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over seven innings. Matt Belisle (4-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief, while Huston Street recorded his 14th save of the season. Pat Burrell hit a two-run double and Miguel Tejada drove in a run for the Giants, who have dropped three of four. Jonathan Sanchez (3-3) gave up four runs — three earned — on five hits with five strikeouts over seven-plus innings.

Final Score: Cincinnati 7, Chicago 5

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Chris Heisey’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference, as the Reds held on for a 7-5 win over the Cubs to complete a two-game sweep. Joey Votto had an RBI double and Scott Rolen went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored for Cincinnati, which has won five straight and 11 of its last 13 games overall. Edinson Volquez worked six innings, allowing three runs on as many hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Bill Bray (1-0) picked up the win for retiring the final batter in the top of the eighth inning. Nick Masset recorded his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer for the Cubs, who have dropped three in a row and six of eight.

Final Score: St. Louis 2, Philadelphia 1

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – Lance Berkman’s bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the ninth lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory and two- game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals put their first three batters on base against Danys Baez (1-2) to start the inning and Berkman’s hit made a winner of Fernando Salas (2-0), who threw a perfect top of the ninth in relief of Jaime Garcia, who tossed eight dominant innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out five. Placido Polanco’s sacrifice fly provided the only run for the offensively starved Phillies, who have dropped four in a row and scored just seven runs in that span. What’s more is Philadelphia has given up only 13 runs in those four games and wasted quality — if not top-notch — outings from its starters. Roy Oswalt turned in five effective innings in his return to the mound Tuesday.

Final Score: Arizona 6, San Diego 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) – Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra both had two hits and two RBI to back Daniel Hudson and help the Diamondbacks to a 6-1 victory over the Padres. Hudson (4-5) gave up only one run on eight hits and two walks in seven innings, and struck out six. He also added a hit for Arizona, which had dropped the opener of this two-game set on Monday. Tim Stauffer (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, and took the loss. Chris Denorfia had three of San Diego’s nine hits, but the Padres had their three-game winning streak broken after going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Milwaukee 0

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer to back Hiroki Kuroda’s quality start, as the Dodgers snapped their losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Brewers. Kuroda (5-3) allowed only six hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings, and struck out seven. The right-hander had tossed seven scoreless frames in his last start, Wednesday against the Pirates. The effort helped Los Angeles snap its three-game slide, which included a 2-1 loss to Milwaukee in Monday’s opener of this two-game set. The Dodgers had scored just twice during the skid. Randy Wolf (3-4) allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Brewers, who had won four in a row.

Pittsburgh at Washington, postponed

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Tuesday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals was postponed because of rain. A makeup date has not yet been announced. The Pirates will return to the nation’s capital for a three-game set from July 1-3. The Nationals won Monday’s opener of what was originally a two-game series, 4-2. Washington is next headed to New York for a two-game set against the Mets, while the Pirates will continue a disastrous road trip with two games in Cincinnati. Pittsburgh suffered through a three-game sweep in Milwaukee to start the swing and has lost six in a row overall.

Florida at New York, postponed

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – Tuesday’s game between the Florida Marlins and New York Mets has been postponed due to rain. The game, which was the second of a two-game set, will be made up on July 18 at 7:10 p.m. (et). Florida won Monday’s matchup, 2-1, in the 11th inning thanks to an RBI single in the top of the frame by reliever Burke Badenhop. The Marlins return home to host the Cubs for two games starting on Wednesday while the Mets will host the Nationals for a pair of contests starting on Wednesday.
