Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – Troy Tulowitzki’s two-run homer in the eighth proved to be the difference, as the Colorado Rockies held on to beat the New York Mets, 7-6, in the start of a four-game series. Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez both drove in three for the Rockies, who have won three in a row and improved to 7-2 to start the year. Seth Smith finished 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Mets reliever Bobby Parnell (0-1) took the mound in the eighth with the game tied, 4-4, but gave up three runs. New York rallied for two runs in the bottom half, but fell short to lose for the fifth time in six games. Jose Reyes tripled twice to lead the Mets’ offense, while David Wright homered. Both starters gave up four runs. Only two of the runs Colorado’s Jason Hammel gave up in six innings were earned, while the Mets’ Mike Pelfrey was credited with three earned runs allowed in 5 1/3 frames.

Houston, TX (Sports Network) – Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run double in the first inning, as the Chicago Cubs struck early and then outlasted Houston to win the first of a three-game set, 5-4. Starlin Castro hit three singles and crossed the plate three times, adding a stolen a base for the Cubs, who were coming off a series loss to Milwaukee. Ryan Dempster (1-2) worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks, while also striking out nine to earn the win. Astros starter Nelson Figueroa (0-2) lasted only four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He was 2-0 against the Cubs in 2010 with a 2.77 ERA in three appearances.

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) – Lance Berkman blasted two home runs while Jon Jay had a pinch-hit homer in St. Louis’ 8-2 win over Arizona to start a three- game series. Kyle McClellan (1-0) did it from the mound and in the batter’s box where he went six innings and also knocked in two runs for the Cardinals, who salvaged a win in the final game of a series with San Francisco on Sunday. The starting pitcher allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Justin Upton and Melvin Mora each had a pair of hits for the Diamondbacks, who finished 2-1 in a three-game set against Cincinnati over the weekend. Barry Enright (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings.

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) – Chris Heisey hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Edinson Volquez and the Reds’ bullpen held up the lead in a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Jonny Gomes added a solo homer for Cincinnati, which had lost three of four coming in. Volquez (2-0) shook off a shaky start and only gave up two runs on three hits and three walks in six innings to get credit for the win. Mat Latos (0-1), who started the season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, was charged with three runs on four hits in his six-inning start for San Diego, which salvaged the finale of a three-game series with the Dodgers on Sunday.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) – Clayton Kershaw tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers handle the San Francisco Giants, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park. Kershaw (2-1) gave up six hits to go with seven strikeouts and two walks. He has a 1.37 ERA. Rod Barajas hit a solo homer for the Dodgers, who took three of four from the Giants to begin the season. Andre Ethier went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Pat Burrell hit a solo homer in the ninth for San Francisco, which has lost two in a row since a three-game winning streak. Madison Bumgarner (0-2) got rocked in five frames, allowing five runs on eight hits. He also walked four batters in the loss.
