Manhattan names Masiello new men’s hoops coach by The Sports Network
Riverdale, NY (Sports Network) – Steve Masiello has been named the men’s head basketball coach of Manhattan College.
“I am honored and humbled to be the next coach of Manhattan College,” stated Masiello. “I am eager to lead the Jaspers back to prominence as being a premier program in the conference, and re-establishing our rich tradition and winning history.”
A New York native, Masiello helped lead the Jaspers to three postseason appearances in four years (2001-05) as an assistant coach. The run of success included consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament (2003 and 2004), resulting in first round victory over Florida in the latter appearance.
Masiello honed his craft over the last six years as an assistant at Louisville, where he built a reputation as one of the nation’s most renowned recruiters while also managing the team’s game preparation and scouting responsibilities for the last three seasons.
“Steve has been a tireless worker in his six years at Louisville,” explained Cards’ head coach Rick Pitino. “I’ve seen him grow from a ball boy with the New York Knicks to an outstanding teacher of the game. I’m real proud of his efforts and I know he will do an unbelievable job turning Manhattan back into a winner.”
The Jaspers went just 3-15 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this past season and 6-25 overall. Former head coach Barry Rohrssen was relieved of his duties in March. He compiled a 58-95 record in five seasons at the helm.
