Kemba Walker named Cousy Award winner by the Sports Network

Springfield, MA (Sports Network) – Connecticut’s Kemba Walker has been named the 2011 winner of the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the top point guard in men’s college basketball.

Walker has been stellar for the Huskies this season, averaging 23.9 points and 4.5 assists. But he saved his best moments for this month.

The junior led the Huskies as they won five games in five days to capture the Big East Tournament title. Walker averaged 26 points during that tourney and hit a memorable buzzer-beater to lift UConn over Pittsburgh.

Now he has the Huskies in the Final Four. They will face Kentucky in a national semifinal on Saturday.

“We are honored to present Kemba Walker the 2011 Bob Cousy Award,” said Ken Kaufman, chairman of the Bob Cousy Award. “Kemba’s work on the floor has clearly been the driving force of the successful Connecticut season and we could not think of a more deserving candidate for this year’s award.”

Walker beat four other finalists for the award: Cleveland State’s Norris Cole, BYU’s Jimmer Fredette, Duke’s Nolan Smith and Wisconsin’s Jordan Taylor.

The award, which is named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtics guard Bob Cousy, is given out each year by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The presentation will be on Monday, April 4 in Houston at the Final Four
