Horse Sense 4/22/11 by Steve Williams

Not only did Uncle Mo lose his momentum, 3 other potential Kentucky Derby contenders were ruled out this past weekend. To Honor and Serve, Jaycito, and Premier Pegasus all were taken off the Derby Trail by their trainers after coming up with leg injuries in the past week.

Not so for Uncle Mo, sent off as a 1-9 favorite in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Uncle Mo looked like he was running to another victory at the top of the stretch. The Breeders Cup Juvenile champion sluggishly made it to the wire behind winner, Toby’s Corner and Arthur’s Tale. This was the first defeat for Uncle Mo.

The shocking upset has trainer, Todd Pletcher keeping a close eye on the potential Derby starter. Pletcher will ship Uncle Mo to Churchill Downs but was non-commital to Derby day.

At Santa Anita, Premier Pegasus and Jaycito(first and second choices)were scratched. Giving Bob Baffert’s 13-1 Midnight Interlude an unexpected win in the One Million dollar Santa Anita Derby. Baffert said he will head to Kentucky with the surprise winner.

Another Baffert trainee, The Factor will be the expected top choice in this Saturday’s Arkansas Derby. If The Factor runs to expectations and ends up with the win, he most likely will be the Kentucky Derby favorite.

With injuries and upsets along the Derby Trail, this shapes up as one of the most wide-open Derby fields in sometime. Only 3 weeks to go before owners, trainers and horse racing fans head to Churchill Downs for another exciting Kentucky Derby.

Right now The Factor, Uncle Mo, and Dialed In are this handicapper’s top 3.  However things change rapidly in Horse Racing, so we will keep you posted as we move closer to Saturday May 7.
