Great opening weekend in NCAA college football by The Gaming Today’s Mark Mayer

What more does Boise State have to prove?

The Broncos again showed they are legit with a convincing win over Georgia in Atlanta. For Bulldogs coach Mark Richt, his coaching future in Athens may very well come down to this week’s SEC opener against South Carolina.

My BCS championship picks, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech, got off to strong starts, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Boise wind up in the big game. No team deserves it more.

One team that doesn’t have to worry about national championship consideration is Oregon State. The Bulldogs lost to Sacrificial, uh Sacramento State in Corvallis, 29-28. Are you kidding me?

It was a great opening weekend in college football with plenty of scoring, wild finishes, incredible turnarounds and bizarre uniforms. Somehow I don’t think we will see Georgia in those digs this week against the Gamecocks.

And we have a new name for the Heisman – Baylor QB Robert Griffin III. And I thought the only III was Monti Rock.

We’ll try to stick with our 10-5 rule – 10 best college picks, 5 top pros. It should have been 10 college last week instead of nine, but we forgot to list Mississippi State over Memphis.

We’ll take the 5-yard delay of pick penalty.

CFB

Oregon St +19½ at Wisc (NT): The Rebels showed they could move the ball on Wisconsin’s first team defense and score against the second. The Beavers will score a few and give up a bunch. OVER.

Miss St +6½ at Auburn: The Bulldogs are a sleeping giant in the SEC. But I’m not about to give 6½ at War Eagle, especially with Auburn pulling that opener out. AUBURN.

TCU -2½ at Air Force: The Falcons lost by just 7 to TCU last year in Fort Worth. Great spot for Force after Frogs lost at Baylor. But TCU was much better in the second half and this line is very low. TCU.

FIU (+4½) at Louisville: The line opened 9 and fell bigtime. We’re following the money. Louisville did not impress in opener. We’re on the dog here to go 2-0. FIU.

Va Tech -19½ at ECU (NT): The Pirates allowed 45 or more points seven times last year and began 2011 giving up 55 to South Carolina. Now the Hokies exceed the speed limit. OVER.

Houston -22 at N. Texas: Case Keenum is being hyped to throw for a record 6,000 yards this season. If Fla. International can score 41 on NT, we’re looking at 82. HOUSTON.

S. Carolina -3 at Georgia: The Gamecocks are no longer the choking “dawgs” on the road in this SEC rivalry. A big dose of Lattimore sends the Bulldogs to 0-2. S. CAROLINA.

N. Mexico +35 at Arkansas: The Lobos will get a nice payday and parting gifts for allowing the Razorbacks to kick their rear ends for four quarters. ARKANSAS.

N. Mexico St +18½ at Minn: The Gophers don’t get many opportunities to look Golden in the Big Ten. New Mexico State is definitely not in the Big Ten. MINNESOTA.

UAB +22½ at Florida: The Gators attack anything that says Alabama even if the post mark is Birmingham instead of Tuscaloosa. Muschamp can play all 100 players. FLORIDA.

NFL

Seattle +5½ at SF (38): Just can’t see laying that large a number with San Francisco’s volatile QB situation. Good chance for Pete Carroll to steal one on the road. SEATTLE.

Buffalo +6½ at KC (40½): The games count now so figure the Chiefs will finally show up. The Bills are masters of keeping games close and getting 6½ points away from home is plenty. BUFFALO.

NY Giants -3 at Wash (37½): These teams always seem to meet in the opener and the Giants usually win. It’s time for the Skins to rise up at home and pull the surprise. WASHINGTON.

Philly -5 at St. Louis (43½): The hype will be Michael Vick and the Dream Team. That’s just fine with Sam Bradford, who looks like a dream QB come true. ST. LOUIS.

New England -7 at Miami (45½): Hurricane warnings are out Monday night for Brady and Belichick. If any team in the No Fun League can cover 7 points on the road, it’s the Patriots. NEW ENGLAND.
