Goodell still concerned about lingering lockout by The Sports Network

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell again stated his concern over the negative effect the lingering lockout is having and remained adamant that both sides need to get back to the bargaining table.

Goodell spoke in Indianapolis during the owners’ spring meetings and addressed a couple of issues surrounding the ongoing work stoppage.

“The longer [the labor issue] goes, the more damage is done to the game,” Goodell stressed. “We made this point back in March, [that] it becomes more difficult when you get into litigation and that has proven to be true.”

Wednesday marked Day 71 of the lockout, which appears likely to last at least through June 3, when the league’s formal appeal of a lower court order that briefly ended the work stoppage will he heard before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. No new talks with the decertified union have been scheduled.

“Unfortunately, we’re not negotiating,” Goodell said. “Any time you’re talking it’s a positive. I’d welcome any communication.”

The lockout has already forced the NFL to cancel its rookie symposium and the summer is rapidly approaching, meaning there will probably be deadlines for when the league will postpone the start of training camps and preseason games.

“We don’t have a date [for those things], but that time is coming,” Goodell said glumly. “We canceled our rookie symposium, but we’re getting close to where we’ll have to take [deadlines] into consideration.”

Goodell said individual teams are taking different approaches during the lockout in regards to personnel, including salary reductions, furloughs and staff cuts. He also said the league has noticed a drop-off in traffic on the NFL’s website, as well as a decrease in ratings during the most recent draft.
