George Washington fires Hobbs by The Sports Network

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – George Washington fired head men’s basketball coach Karl Hobbs on Monday.

Hobbs, who took over in 2001, led the Colonials to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2005-07. GW also won the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament championship in 2005 and 2007, and captured the A-10 regular season title in 2006.

“Karl Hobbs brought GW men’s basketball to new heights of success and achieved many firsts for GW men’s basketball that will never be forgotten. I thank him for his significant contributions to GW athletics and I wish him every success in his future endeavors,” said Jack Kvancz, GW director of athletics.

Hobbs’ current contract was set to expire next year.

“It has been an honor to serve as head coach of the George Washington University’s men’s basketball team. I am proud of what we achieved here and am grateful to have had the chance to work with and guide the development and accomplishments of so many outstanding student-athletes. I thank the university, particularly President Trachtenberg and President Knapp, for its support and wish the Colonials great success in the future,” said Hobbs.
