Former Blue Devil Tom Emma dies by The Sports Network

Former Duke basketball player Tom Emma was found dead Tuesday morning following a fall from the 12th floor of the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.

Emma’s body was reportedly discovered on a second-floor landing of the building in what is being ruled an apparent suicide.

A member of the Blue Devils from 1980-83 and a former team captain, Emma was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the 10th round of the 1983 draft, though he never played in a regular season NBA game.

At Duke, Emma averaged 7.1 ppg in 110 contests. On Nov. 29, 1980, he scored a career-high 19 points in Mike Krzyzewski’s first game as the program’s head coach.

“The Duke basketball family is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Tom Emma,” said Krzyzewski. “He was a good man and fine representative of Duke University. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. He will be missed.”

Emma, who earned a degree from Duke and a master’s degree from Columbia University, was president of Power Performance, Inc. — a company that specializes in training athletes — at the time of his death.
