Carson, originally claimed off waivers from Carolina on February 28, will make $550,000 in the first year of the contract and $600,000 in the second.
Flames general manager Jay Feaster said several players in end-of-season meetings praised Carson’s passing ability in transition during his six games with the club.
“Based on his solid play at the end of last season, we believe Brett can be an every day defenseman for us,” Feaster said in a statement.
Carson, 25, played parts of three seasons with the Hurricanes and has two goals and 10 assists with a plus-11 rating in 78 career NHL games.
