COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE…LOOKING FOR AN ANGLE? by The Gold Sheet’s Gary Olshan

Wake Forest at DUKE…Duke eager to snap 11-game losing streak to neighboring “Tobacco Road” rival WF.  Blue Devil QB Sean Renfree had 358 YP & 4 TDs LY, but still suffered 54-48 road setback (most pts. scored in a loss in school history!).

Western Michigan at EASTERN MICHIGAN…The away team is 12-5 vs. spread last 17 in this MAC series.  WMU’s sizzling sr. QB Alex Carder was en fuego in LY’s 45-30 home victory, hitting 17 of 21 for 349 and 4 TDs.

Maryland at FLORIDA STATE…Maryland’s trips to the Sunshine State have usually been gloomy, dropping all 11 played in Tallahassee by an avg. 45-17 score.  This is FSU’s first home game since 23-13 loss vs. Oklahoma on Sept. 17.  Seven of last 9 in series have gone “under.”

Indiana at IOWA…Iowa understandably came up flat in ho-hum 18-13 victory in Bloomington LY following emotionally-charged battles vs. Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State.  In fact, Haweyes needed 52-yd. TD pass with 2:52 to pull out win.  Eight of last 10 in series have gone “over.”

Kansas State at KANSAS…Nationally-ranked KSU has held upper hand in the Sunflower Showdown, posting 13-4 spread mark last 17 in series.

Auburn at LSU…Defending national champ AU is 7-2 as rare DD reg.-season dog since 2000, while LSU is just 4-18-1 as SEC chalk in Baton Rouge since 2004 (1-1 TY).  Auburn HC Gene Chizik is 9-2 SU last 11 vs. ranked teams (4-2 vs. Top 10).

Wisconsin at MICHIGAN STATE…Home team has garnered 6 straight in this Big Ten series (4-2 vs. spread).  MSU HC Mark Dantonio missed LY’s tilt due to health issues, but QB Kirk Cousins carried on, completing 20 of 29 for 269 yds. & 3 TDP in 34-24 home win.

Nebraska at MINNESOTA…First meeting in 21 years, but Huskers have taken 14 straight vs. UM, destroying Gophers by combined 104-0 score in last two clashes (played in 1989 & 1990).  And remember Nebraska’s 84-13 win over UM in 1983!

Arkansas at OLE MISS…Rebel mentor Houston Nutt (Ark. HC 1998-07) has defeated his former employer in 2 of 3 clashes, and Nutt had notched 6 in row in series (first 4 as Hogs’ head honcho) until 38-24 road loss LY.

East Carolina at NAVY…ECU looking to regain some self-esteem after 76-35 home blowout vs. Navy LY.  Pirate QB Dominique Davis had 413 YP and 5 TDs, but ECU “D” didn’t do its job, allowing a whopping 521 YR on 62 totes.

Fresno State at NEVADA…FSU’s fiery HC Pat Hill will remind squad it hasn’t dropped 4 straight in series since waaaayyy back in 1926 (series began in 1923!).  In LY’s wild 35-34 home loss (7 lead changes), Bulldogs’ star RB Robbie Rouse rambled for 217 yds. (8.3 ypc).

Penn State at NORTHWESTERN…NW amped up to end 4-game series losing streak, especially after blowing 21-pt., 2nd-Q lead in 35-21 defeat in “Happy Valley”  LY (matching biggest comeback for JoePa.).  Wildcat QB Dan Persa accounted for 309 yds. (109 YR), but Nittany Lion QB Matt McGloin had one of his best outings, throwing for 225 yds. & 4 TDs.v>
