COLLEGE FB REPORT…UPDATED BOWL PROJECTIONS! by The Gold Sheet’s Bruce Marshall

Things are changing almost by the minute in the bowl countdown, especially regarding the BCS title game. By the looks of things, however, expect to see LSU and Alabama teeing it up for a rematch of the 9-6 Tigers’ overtime win two weeks Nov. 5 at Tuscaloosa.

As we head into Thanksgiving week, here are our latest postseason projections.

NEW MEXICO (Dec. 17 at Albuquerque, Mountain West vs. Pac-12): Wyoming vs. Washington…This would represent quite a fall from grace for U-Dub, which was thinking Sun or Holiday until a recent 3-game losing streak. Now, the Huskies will gladly take whatever is offered. Wyo is now officially bowl-eligible after reaching seven wins, which the Pokes needed with two wins over FCS foes (Weber State and Texas State) in September.

FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO (Dec. 17 at Boise, MAC vs. WAC): La Tech vs. Ohio…La Tech is now bowl-eligible and could enter Boise as no worse than WAC co-champ if the Bulldogs beat New Mexico State this week. MAC East champ Ohio U will be looking for its first bowl win after three previus losses under Frank Solich.

NEW ORLEANS (Dec. 17 at New Orleans, Sun Belt vs. CUSA): ULL vs. UTEP…The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns have been a surprise for new HC Mark Hudspeth and would be a popular pick for the nearby Superdome date. Keep an eye on this spot from CUSA, which might not be able to fill it unless UTEP beats already bowl-ineligible UCF this week.

BEEF O’BRADY’S ST. PETERSBURG (Dec. 20 at St. Pete, Big East vs. CUSA): South Florida vs. ECU…Might as well get local USF into this game at the Trop. Although both the Bulls and Ruffin McNeill’s ECU each need one more win to qualify (the Pirates’ regular-season finale this week at Marshall likely determines the CUSA spot in this bowl).

POINSETTIA (Dec. 21 at San Diego, WAC vs. Mountain West): Nevada vs. TCU…Nevada is bowl-eligible but blew a chance to be WAC solo champs last week vs. La Tech. For TCU, this is what happens to BCS hopes when losing to Baylor and SMU.

MAACO LAS VEGAS (Dec. 22 at Las Vegas, Mountain West vs. Pac-12): Boise State vs. Arizona State…Big letdowns for both teams that were dreaming much bigger things (especially Boise) not long ago. Boise still has an outside shot at a BCS at-large slot. As for ASU, we wonder if the Sun Devils will even accept a bowl bid if they finish 6-6, with HC Dennis Erickson’s future very iffy at the moment.

SHERATON HAWAII (Dec. 24 at Honolulu, WAC vs. CUSA): Utah State vs. SMU…We’re not sure hometown Hawaii can win its last two games to get bowl-eligible, especially with QB Bryant Moniz out with a broken ankle. But exciting Utah State could fill the WAC’s spot in Honolulu against SMU and HC June Jones, returning to his old haunt in Honolulu.

INDEPENDENCE (Dec. 26 at Shreveport, ACC vs. Mountain West): Wake Forest vs. Air Force…The Force still needs to beat CSU this week to get to bowl eligible thanks to two wins over FCS foes (South Dakota and Tennessee State). Wake Forest is bowl-eligible but probably near the back of the ACC postseason queue.

LITTLE CAESAR’S (Dec. 27 at Detroit, MAC vs. Big Ten): Toledo vs. Iowa…The Hawkeyes are bowl-eligible and would prefer another assignment to this one; Penn State’s eventual postseason disposition could impact Iowa. Nearby Toledo from the MAC would also be well-supported at Ford Field.

BELK CHARLOTTE (Dec. 27 at Charlotte, ACC vs. Big East): NC State vs. West Virginia…Tom O’Brien’s NC State needs a win over Maryland this week (which shouldn’t be too hard) to get bowl eligible. West Virginia might have blown its chance at a major bowl.

MILITARY (Dec. 28 at Washington, D.C, ACC vs. Navy): Virginia vs. Northern Illinois…Navy’s spot in this bowl is open as the Mids cannot get bowl-eligible after last week’s bitter 27-24 loss at San Jose State. We suspect the MAC fills this spot with NIU. Mike London’s Virginia still has a BCS shot if it can beat Virginia Tech this week and win the ACC’s Coastal Division.

HOLIDAY (Dec. 28 at San Diego, Big XII vs. Pac-12): Texas A&M vs. Utah…The Ags finally got bowl-eligible last week with that romp past Kansas. Utah suddenly has a look at the Pac-12 title game if it can beat Colorado on Friday and UCLA loses to Southern Cal on Saturday, although the Utes would be big underdogs on the road at Oregon or Stanford in the conference title game. They likely end up in San Diego, not a bad consolation prize.

CHAMPS SPORTS (Dec. 29 at Orlando, ACC vs. Big East): Florida State vs. Notre Dame…FSU’s BCS hopes were dashed in October, but would be a popular regional pick for this Orlando date. Not to mention renewing acquaintances with Notre Dame, also out of the BCS mix but uses its Big East connections to land this spot.

ALAMO (Dec. 29 at San Antonio, Big XII vs. Pac-12): Texas vs. Cal…The Horns could fall further than this spot if they lose two more to finish 6-6. Jeff Tedford’s Cal is also bowl-eligible and looking at this assignment (instead of Albuquerque vs. a Mountain West foe, perhaps) if it can beat Arizona State this week.

ARMED FORCES (Dec. 30 at Dallas, BYU vs. CUSA): BYU vs. Tulsa…Tulsa still has a shot at winning CUSA if it can beat Houston this week. We think this assignment is still the most likely, although the Cougs could slot here in Dallas instead if the Golden Hurricane wrecks their unbeaten mark this week. BYU’s new nomadic existence as an independent will have the Cougs rotating among several lower-tier bowls in upcoming years. Are they sure they don’t want to join some league?

YANKEE PINSTRIPE (Dec. 30 at Bronx, NY, Big East vs. Big XII): Cincinnati vs. Missouri…Cincy has lost its grip on the Big East lead since QB Zach Collaros went down, and probably misses the BCS as a result. Curious New Yorkers can also get a look at this Missouri team causing all of the fuss in the Big XII and SEC.

MUSIC CITY (Dec. 30 at Nashville, SEC vs. ACC): Mississippi State vs. North Carolina…Provided MSU can win the Egg Bowl vs. Ole Miss on Nov. 26, it will get the six wins needed for eligibility. This would be a return engagement in Nashville for the Tar Heels, who could slot into this spot now that Miami-Florida has decided it will not accept a bowl invitation this season.  Bulldogs-Tar Heels would recall a long-ago Sun Bowl between the schools played with fog hanging over the field in El Paso back in 1974.

INSIGHT (Dec. 30 at Tempe, Big Ten vs. Big XII): Northwestern vs. Iowa State…We didn’t think either of these two would be bowl-eligible a few weeks ago. Now, here they are!

MEINEKE CAR CARE TEXAS (Dec. 31 at Houston, Big XII vs. Big Ten): Baylor vs. Ohio State…Note that Meineke has switched allegiance from Charlotte to Houston for this year’s bowl sponsorship. Baylor would be a popular regional choice for Houston as it was a year ago when losing to Illinois. Ohio State lands somewhere in the postseason, with this date and Dallas for the Ticket City Classic the most likely.

SUN (Dec. 31 at El Paso, ACC vs. Pac-12): Clemson vs. UCLA…Of course, at this moment, Clemson folks think the Tigers are BCS-bound, but we think this is a more-likely destination in El Paso. UCLA’s late rally also still has the Bruins in with a shout for the Pac-12 title game.

LIBERTY (Dec. 31 at Memphis, CUSA vs. SEC): Southern Miss vs. Vanderbilt…The likely CUSA title game between Houston and USM could be a very good one; if the Cougs win and finish unbeaten, they have a chance at a BCS at-large. In which case the Golden Eagles slot into Memphis to face James Franklin’s surprising Vandy, which needs to beat Wake Forest this week to get eligible.

KRAFT FIGHT HUNGER (Dec. 31 at San Francisco, Army vs. Pac-12): San Diego State vs. Syracuse…Southern Cal’s probation and two likely BCS teams means the Pac-12 might not fill this spot. San Diego State would fill the western role, while Syracuse from the Big East takes the spot Army could have had if it reached 6 wins (which it can’t anymore).

CHICK-FIL-A (Dec. 31 at Atlanta, ACC vs. SEC): Georgia Tech vs. Florida…The Jackets would be a popular local pick at the Georgia Dome, with the GT campus only about ten minutes away. Florida actually needed to beat FCS Furman last week (a game in which the Gators struggled) to get bowl-eligible.

TICKETCITY (Jan. 2 at Dallas, CUSA vs. Big Ten): Arkansas State vs. Penn State…A lot of bowls don’t want to touch Penn State, but this TicketCity game in Dallas probably wouldn’t mind risking a little controversy. CUSA probably can’t fill its spot in this game, so we think nearby Sun Belt champ Arkansas State might get a shot.

OUTBACK (Jan. 2 at Tampa, Big Ten vs. SEC): Michigan vs. Georgia…Georgia of course could upset all of the BCS title game plans if it knocks off likely SEC West winner LSU in the conference title game. But we think Tampa is a more likely destination against Brady Hoke’s Michigan.

CAPITAL ONE (Jan. 2 at Orlando: Big Ten vs. SEC): Arkansas vs. Michigan State…Maybe the best non-BCS game we can recall, with both of these teams likely on the outside of that group unless the Hogs can beat LSU this week. We are assuming Michigan State loses in the likely Big Ten title game rematch vs. Wisconsin and QB Russell Wilson and will end up in Orlando instead.

GATOR (Jan. 2 at Jacksonville, Big Ten vs. SEC): Nebraska vs. South Carolina…Different swaths of red would cover the Gator Bowl. Nebraska’s chances for the first Big Ten title game were scotched last week in the loss at Michigan; Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks know the feeling after their loss at Arkansas two weeks ago opened the SEC East door for Georgia.

ROSE (Jan. 2 at Pasadena, BCS vs. BCS): Oregon vs. Wisconsin…Some luster has come off of the Ducks after the bitter 38-35 loss to Southern Cal, but Oregon still looks well-positioned to win the Pac-12 and will be heavily favored to beat Oregon State and either UCLA or Utah in the next two weeks. Wisconsin can get tot he Big Ten title game by beating Penn State this week (which it should) and will then likely get a rematch vs. Michigan State for the conference title.

FIESTA (Jan. 2 at Glendale, AZ, BCS vs. BCS): Oklahoma vs. Stanford…Oklahoma’s loss to Baylor means the Sooners could get knocked out of the BCS entirely with a season-ending loss at Oklahoma State. The Fiesta Bowl wants Andrew Luck and Stanford if the Rose Bowl doesn’t get the Cardinal.

SUGAR (Jan. 3 at New Orleans, BCS vs. BCS): Oklahoma State vs. Houston…Houston can become the first-ever CUSA team to make the BCS, but it must beat Tulsa and likely Southern Miss the next two weeks to do so. A potential shootout between the Cougs and Case Keenum and the Cowboys and Brandon Weeden could test the capacity of the Superdome scoreboard.

ORANGE (Jan. 4 at Miami, BCS vs. BCS): Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers…The Orange is left with an ACC-Big East match this year. We still think Frank Beamer’s VPI is likely to get there from the ACC, but we have no clue what will happen in the Big East. Although we think Rutgers’ chances look best if it can beat UConn this week.

BBVA Compass (Jan. 6 at Birmingham, Big East vs. SEC): Louisville vs. Tennessee…Louisville still has Big East title and BCS hopes but also is only 6-5 at the moment. Tennessee can scramble back to bowl-eligibility by beating Kentucky this week.

COTTON (Jan. 6 at Arlington, Big XII vs. SEC): Kansas State vs. Auburn…Not many figured Bill Snyder and K-State for a date like this when the season began. Auburn is not what it was a year ago but is still very bowl-eligible.

GODADDY.COM (Jan. 8 at Mobile, Sun Belt vs. MAC): FIU vs. Temple…This would actually be a decent matchup, although most guys will tune in for all of the commercials featuring GoDaddy girls Danica Patrick and Jillian Michaels, plus, if rumor is correct, US soccer goalie and DWTS siren Hope Solo.

BCS TITLE GAME (Jan. 9 at New Orleans, BCS vs. BCS): Alabama vs. LSU…They meet again. Stay tuned…
