College Basketball: Five Overrated Teams ATS by Kyle Hunter

College basketball betting is all about finding value. There are plenty of occasions where great teams aren’t necessarily great teams to bet on because of the lack of value. A great example of this was the Kentucky Wildcats earlier this year. Kentucky actually failed to cover the spread in a span of 14 straight games from late November to early January. The Wildcats only lost one of those games straight up, but bettors who blindly wagered on Kentucky were hurting in a big way. The books have adjusted their lines on Kentucky, and I don’t see them as overrated at this point. Let’s take a look at five teams that are overrated by the oddsmakers right now.

Five Overrated Teams ATS

5. Butler- The Bulldogs are just 4-14-2 ATS this year. Brad Stevens is one of the best coaches in the business, but this team simply doesn’t have the same amount of talent they have had in recent years. The books know that the public likes betting on Butler at this point, so they continue to be overrated.

4. Villanova- Jay Wright’s Wildcats have taken a major step back this year. Teams have learned that the Wildcats simply don’t have any outside shooters at all right now. Pack it in the paint and force Villanova to beat you from the outside and you’ll probably beat this team. The books are still too high on this team.

3. Indiana State- The Sycamores have gotten too much love from the books this year, probably because they made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. Often you’ll find teams who made it to the Big Dance from the smaller conferences are overvalued the next season. This is a pretty good team, but they aren’t as good as the oddsmakers have them pegged.

2. Duke- The Blue Devils are just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games. Duke hasn’t really picked up many victories to hang their hats on so far this year. This is a team that has struggled with subpar competition, and even Coach K sounds pretty worried of late. Until they prove they are worthy of their ranking, stay away from Duke.

1. Clemson- Brad Brownell’s team is struggling in a big way this year, but the oddsmakers continue to line their games as if it were last year. The Tigers were an NCAA Tournament team last year, but they might struggle to get to the NIT this year unless they kick it into gear. Clemson is 4-11 ATS this season.
