Holliday was placed on the DL with a quadriceps injury that was retroactive to the beginning of the month. Before that, he led the National League with a .342 batting average and helped the Cards to a 25-16 record while in the lineup.
The slugger is returning just in time to help St. Louis halt a season-long five-game losing streak and avoid being swept by the Nationals for the first time since 2007. Holliday also missed seven games after an April 1st emergency appendectomy.
To make room on the roster, St. Louis placed right handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder strain. The move is retroactive to June 13.
The rookie closer has five saves in seven opportunities with a 1.88 ERA and 33 strikeouts.
