Canucks’ Rome banned for rest of Cup Finals by The Sports Network

The National Hockey League disciplined Aaron Rome for his late hit to Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton, suspending the Vancouver Canucks defenseman for four games.

The incident occurred during the first period of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday night.

Horton was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher just over five minutes into the contest after absorbing the vicious check, which left him with a severe concussion that will sideline for the remainder of the series.

Rome was given an interference major and game misconduct for the hit.

“Two factors were considered in reaching this decision,” said NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy in a statement on Tuesday. “The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury.”

Rome, like Horton, will miss the rest of the Cup Finals. If the series ends before Game 7, the suspension will carry over to the start of the 2011-12 regular season.
