Bruins’ Horton to miss remainder of Stanley Cup Finals by The Sports Network

Boston Bruins right wing Nathan Horton will miss the remainder of the Stanley Cup Finals because of a severe concussion he sustained during the first period of Game 3 against Vancouver on Monday night.

Horton was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher just over five minutes into the contest after taking a vicious check from Vancouver’s Aaron Rome.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued an update on Horton’s condition Tuesday morning.

Horton is tied for second among Bruins players in playoff scoring this spring with 17 points on eight goals and nine assists. He’s netted three game-winning goals this postseason, including series-winners in Game 7 against both Montreal and Tampa Bay.

On Monday night, Horton was skating through the neutral zone and sent a pass just before he reached the Vancouver blue line. Rome stepped up and put a shoulder high into Horton, who immediately fell backward and hit his head on the ice.

For several minutes Horton was examined by team personnel, who immobilized his head and neck, and eventually took him off on a stretcher. He was seen talking before being taken off the ice.

After being transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, it was reported that Horton had movement in his arms and legs. He has since been released from the hospital, while Rome was given a four-game suspension by the league for the excessive hit.

The Bruins went on to win the game, 8-1.

Vancouver leads the best-of-seven series, 2-1, with Game 4 set for Wednesday in Boston.
