Auburn ups Chizik’s salary to $3.5 million by The Sports Network

Calling it a well-deserved raise, Auburn has upped the salary of head football coach Gene Chizik and extended his contract through 2015.

Chizik, after leading the Tigers to their first national championship since 1957, will make $3.5 million a year under the new deal. He could earn up to $4.5 million annually with incentives.

“We believe that we have the best coach in college football,” Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs said in a statement. “More importantly, coach Chizik is a great mentor to our student-athletes, he represents Auburn with class and integrity in all that he does, and he is an outstanding ambassador for Auburn University.”

Plucked from Iowa State in December 2008, Chizik has led the Tigers to a 22-5 record in his two seasons at the helm.

All of the losses came in his first year — the Tigers were 14-0 this past season, including a 22-19 victory over Oregon in the BCS National Championship Game. They won the talent-rich Southeastern Conference for the seventh time.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to build the foundation of the Auburn football program so that we can compete for championships regularly,” said Chizik.

Auburn opens the 2011 season on September 3 against Utah State.
