Victor Martinez clubbed a game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth and Miguel Cabrera added a solo shot for Detroit, which has won five of its last eight games. Michael Cuddyer drove in a pair of runs for the Twins, who have lost eight of 10.

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) – Bartolo Colon tossed his first complete game since 2006, as the New York Yankees downed Oakland, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game set. Colon (3-3) allowed just four hits while fanning six without walking a batter, winning for the first time since April 27. It was the first time the burly Dominican right-hander completed a start since throwing a four- hit shutout at Seattle for the Angels on July 5, 2006. Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who were coming off a series loss at Seattle over the weekend. Robinson Cano added two hits and an RBI. Josh Willingham and Cliff Pennington doubled for the Athletics, whose four- game win streak came to an end. Trevor Cahill (6-3) worked 6 2/3 innings in defeat, charged with four runs and four hits with five walks.

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Doug Fister threw 7 1/3 strong innings, which included a career-high nine strikeouts, to lead Seattle to a 4-3 victory over Baltimore in the opener of a three-game series. Fister (3-5) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in the Mariners’ 11th win in their last 14 games. Jake Arrieta (6-3) had the shortest outing of his career when he allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in just 2 1/3 innings as Baltimore lost its fourth straight game.

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) – Torii Hunter blasted two home runs, including the go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth, to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a 10-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Bobby Abreu also paced the Angels’ offense, collecting four hits and two RBI. Mark Trumbo and Peter Bourjos also homered for the victors. Kevin Jepsen (1-2) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the year for the Angels. LA starter Ervin Santana tossed six innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking four. Blue-chip rookie Eric Hosmer picked up two hits, including his fifth home run of the season and a career high- tying four RBI for the Royals, who have lost three in a row. Alex Gordon also homered. Luke Hochevar struggled through five innings for KC, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking three and fanning two. Joakim Soria (3-3) absorbed the loss and blew his fifth save of the season for the Royals.

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) – Mike Napoli hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs, as the Texas Rangers used a 20-hit attack to crush the Tampa Bay Rays, 11-5, in the opener of a three-game series. Endy Chavez went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Rangers, who have won three in a row. Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer and scored three times for the victors. Derek Holland (4-1) gave up five runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings to pick up his first win since April 22. The left-hander also struck out seven and walked five for Texas, which started a seven-game road trip on Monday. Justin Ruggiano hit a three-run homer for the Rays, who got a solo homer from Ben Zobrist. Wade Davis (4-5) allowed a season-high seven runs on 12 hits over just 2 2/3 frames in the loss. This series is a rematch of last year’s American League Division Series that the Rangers won in five games.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) – Jo-Jo Reyes secured his first win in 29 starts and received plenty of support as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Cleveland Indians, 11-1, in the opener of a three-game set from Rogers Centre. Reyes (1-4), went the distance, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out four, to pick up his first victory since June 13, 2008. Prior to Monday, he was tied with Matt Keough and Cliff Curtis for the longest such streak in major-league history at 28 straight winless starts. Jayson Nix blasted a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won four straight, while Rajai Davis, Jose Bautista and Corey Patterson also had two RBI apiece. Fausto Carmona (3-6) suffered the loss after allowing nine runs — seven earned — on nine hits and two walks in only four full frames.

Boston, MA (Sports Network) – Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin recorded two- run hits during a four-run sixth inning, as the Chicago White Sox downed the Boston Red Sox, 7-3, in the opener of a three-game set from Fenway Park. A.J. Pierzynski added a two-run single and Paul Konerko homered for the White Sox, who put the brakes on a three-game skid. Jake Peavy (2-0) allowed six hits and three runs with two strikeouts over seven solid innings to earn the win. Dustin Pedroia knocked in two runs and Adrian Gonzalez had a solo blast for the Red Sox, losers of two straight games after winning five in a row. Jon Lester (7-2) lost for the first time since April 12, rocked in defeat for eight hits and seven runs, walking four and fanning four in 5 2/3 innings.
