Bronx, NY (Sports Network) – J.P. Arencibia had a three-run double and drove in four, as the Toronto Blue Jays earned a 7-3 victory over the Yankees in the opener of a three-game set. Jose Bautista clubbed his major-league leading 19th homer of the season, while Aaron Hill added an RBI single and scored twice for Toronto, which has won nine of its last 12. Carlos Villanueva (2-0), making a spot start in place of Jesse Litsch, who was put on the disabled list with an impingement in his right shoulder, worked five solid innings. Starting his first game since October 3, 2009, the right- hander gave up only one run on two hits, struck out five and walked one. Robinson Cano went 1-for-3 with three RBI for the Yankees, who had won five of six coming into the contest. Bartolo Colon (2-3), who turns 38 on Tuesday, had a rough outing, giving up seven hits and six runs with four walks over six innings. He struck out eight.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) – Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta had two-run hits to lead Detroit past Tampa Bay, 6-3, and take the first edition of a three-game set. Charlie Furbush (1-0) earned a win in his major-league debut when he worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for Phil Coke, who left the game in the fourth because of an ankle injury. Furbush allowed two hits and a walk while fanning three in the Tigers’ second consecutive win after a five- game losing streak. Jeremy Hellickson (5-3) took the loss in 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four as the Rays lost for the seventh time in 10 games.

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) – Asdrubal Cabrera’s eighth-inning double plated the go-ahead run as Cleveland rallied to down Boston, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game series. Cabrera finished 3-for-4 and added a solo homer for the Indians, whose fourth straight win came courtesy of their 11th victory in the final at-bat. Michael Brantley posted an RBI single and Joe Smith (2-1) picked up the win by recording the final out of the eighth. Chris Perez hung on in the ninth to record his 13th save. Carl Crawford homered for the Red Sox, who have dropped two of three. Daniel Bard (1-4) took the loss and a blown save, charged with the winning run on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) – Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz both homered in their first game off the disabled list, and Alexi Ogando tossed his first career shutout to lift Texas over Chicago, 4-0, in the first of a three-game series. Hamilton hadn’t played since April 12, when he suffered a broken bone in his right upper arm during a game against Detroit, and Cruz has been sidelined since May 3 when he suffered a strained right quadriceps muscle in a game at Seattle. Ogando (5-0) scattered five hits and three walks in the first complete game of his career. He also fanned six in the Rangers’ second straight win following a three-game losing streak. John Danks (0-7) also went the distance, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three, as Chicago had its brief two-game win steak snapped.

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) – Luis Rodriguez knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning, as Seattle edged Minnesota, 8-7, in the first of three between the clubs at Target Field. Jack Cust hit a two-run homer and Carlos Peguero added two hits with two RBI for the Mariners, who have reeled off six consecutive victories. Jamey Wright (1-1) picked up the win after hurling a scoreless ninth and Brandon League earned his 11th save with a perfect 10th. Jim Thome’s first action since April 30 saw the slugger rack up his 592nd and 593rd career homers — both two-run shots — for the Twins, who wasted a late three-run lead and lost their fourth straight game. Denard Span homered among his three hits and knocked in two, but Anthony Swarzak (0-2) was charged with the winning run while recording two outs in the deciding frame.

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – Torii Hunter had an RBI double to start a three-run eighth inning and give the Angels a 4-1 victory over the A’s in the opener of a four-game series. Bobby Abreu knocked in a run and Jeff Mathis plated two more for the Angels. Scott Downs (2-1) earned the win when he pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief to give the Angels their third win in four games. Brian Fuentes (1-7) took the loss when he allowed the game- winning run to reach base in the eighth. He relieved starter, Josh Outman, who was making his first start since June 19, 2009. Outman missed the rest of that season and all of 2010 due to Tommy John surgery. Hideki Matsui had the lone RBI for the A’s, who lost their sixth consecutive game.
