American League Game Capsules by The Sports Network

Final Score: Texas 2, Detroit 0

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) – Michael Young and Mitch Moreland each had a run-scoring double, as the Texas Rangers held on for a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Young went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Texas, which has won three straight and improved to 9-1 this season. The defending American League champions are off to their best start since the 1989 campaign, when they began 10-1. Alexi Ogando (2-0) was sensational, allowing only two hits and one walk while fanning four before leaving with a callus on a finger on his pitching hand. On Tuesday, the right-hander held Seattle to two hits over six scoreless innings in his 2011 debut, which helped the Rangers take a 3-2 decision. Neftali Feliz locked the win down and earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Miguel Cabrera had two of the four hits for the Tigers, who have dropped three in a row and four of their last five. Justin Verlander (1-1) was the hard-luck loser despite throwing his 11th career complete game. The veteran righty yielded two runs on six hits with one walk. He also fanned four.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 16, Boston 5

Boston, MA (Sports Network) – New England native Sam Fuld was a single shy of the cycle and knocked in three runs on four hits, as Tampa Bay accumulated 20 hits to crush Boston, 16-5. Johnny Damon, Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton all had three hits for Tampa Bay, which snapped a two-game losing streak to open a three-game set at Fenway Park. Damon, John Jaso and Reid Brignac finished with three RBI apiece. Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson (1-1) did a solid job in 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks. Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz each had a rare triple while Jacoby Ellsbury belted a solo shot for the Red Sox, who were coming off a 2-1 series win over the rival Yankees. Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2) was hammered in two innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. The Red Sox then used three more pitchers, who combined to allow nine more runs, to finish out the game. Carl Crawford went 2-for-5 with ground-rule double in his first game against his former team. The outfielder left the Rays as a free agent this offseason, signing a seven-year, $142 million deal with the Red Sox.

Final Score: Oakland 2, Chicago 1 (10 innings)

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) – Kurt Suzuki hit a solo homer in the 10th inning and broke up Mark Buehrle’s no-hitter in the sixth inning as the Oakland Athletics topped the Chicago White Sox, 2-1. Cliff Pennington scored on a Juan Pierre fielding error with one out in the top of the ninth to pull the A’s even and Tyson Ross (1-0) got the win for allowing only one hit with a walk in three innings of work. He also struck out four. Buehrle, who was in search of his 150th career win, was stellar for Chicago, going eight innings and allowing only two hits and walk one. He completed his solid outing by recording one strikeout. Brent Lillibridge accounted for Chicago’s only run on a solo homer in the fifth inning. Matt Thornton blew his third save of the season by allowing an unearned run on one hit in the eighth, and Jesse Crain (0-1) was tagged for the loss for allowing a run on two hits in 1 2/3.

Final Score: Cleveland 4, LA Angels of Anaheim 0

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – Asdrubal Cabrera roped a solo homer in the first and Matt LaPorta added a three-run shot in the second as the Indians topped the Angels, 4-0, in the first of a three-game set at Angels Stadium. Mitch Talbot (1-0) went eight-plus innings, allowing only five hits and walked a pair while striking out four. Vinnie Pestano closed out the ninth as the Indians won their eighth straight. Tyler Chatwood (0-1) was charged for all four runs on four hits while walking four in his major league debut. Chatwood got the start because expected pitcher Dan Haren came in for relief during the Angels’ 14-inning win over Toronto on Saturday.

Final Score: Seattle 8, Toronto 7

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Luis Rodriguez hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, as the Seattle Mariners rallied from seven runs down to beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-7, in the opener of a three-game series. Rodriguez entered the game in the seventh inning after third baseman Chone Figgins left with a bruised left thumb. Michael Saunders led off the ninth with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Ryan. Ichiro Suzuki came up with two outs and was intentionally walked after he worked a 2-0 count. Suzuki stole second base to allow the game-winning run to come in on Rodriguez’s base hit to right-center field. The come-from-behind victory snapped a seven-game skid for Seattle.
