American League Game Capsules by the Sports Network

Final Score: New York 6, Detroit 3

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) – Mark Teixeira hit a three-run homer and Curtis Granderson slugged a go-ahead solo blast in the seventh, helping the New York Yankees open the season with a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. CC Sabathia pitched six innings in the start for the Yankees, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. The New York bullpen shut down the Tigers from there, tossing three perfect frames. Joba Chamberlain (1-0) got the win, while Mariano Rivera earned his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth. The Yankees are coming off a season in which they won 95 games and advanced to the American League Championship Series before losing to Texas. Brandon Inge finished with two hits and one RBI for Detroit, which went 81-81 last season.

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 4, Kansas City 2

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) – Torii Hunter and Jeff Mathis homered to back a shut-down start by Jered Weaver, and the Angels held on to beat the Royals, 4-2, in their season opener. Weaver (1-0) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, in which he allowed only two hits and two walks. He took a no- hitter into the fourth inning and finished with six strikeouts. Erick Aybar added an RBI double for Los Angeles, which went 80-82 last year — its first losing season since 2003. On the other hand, 2003 was the last time Kansas City had a winning season. The Royals signed Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera in the offseason to help try to snap that streak, and the moves paid off Thursday. Francoeur homered, while Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a walk. Mike Aviles also homered for the Royals, but Luke Hochevar (0-1) gave up four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
