A-Play Chip Shots- by Chip Chirimbes
NFL WEEK 5- Having the opportunity to watch almost every play in every game you often get to see some amazing plays, calls and just outright stupid things happen. Here are a few things that I noticed this week.
New York Giants at Houston Texans- The new ‘Genius’ in NFL quarterbacking has got to be Eli Manning because what happened here is not the first time that he’s done it this year. The Giants had the ball third and eight on his own four yard line Eli chooses to waste a timeout to save a two yard ‘Delay of Game’ penalty. The ‘Genius’ decided that those two yards were more important then one of only three time outs he has each half. To me it just doesn’t make sense, take the two-yard penalty.
Green Bay Packers at Washington Redskins- This has more to do with a player, the Packers’ Charles Woodson arguing strenuously about a pass interference penalty call in over-time which put Washington into ‘can’t miss’ field goal range. So insistent was Woodson that team-mates had to subdue him to prevent an unsportsmanlike penalty. Upon replay it was so obvious that Woodson had committed the penalty that he not only was interfering with the receiver before the ball arrived but was pulling him down via a ‘horse collar’ neck tackle. Another classless professional athlete that can’t accept responsibility for his actions.
Worst Head Coach of ALL time- I have to say that their have many who I thought were the ‘worst’ Head Coach in the NFL going back to the days where Wade Phillips would be a candidate. Guys like Dave Wannstedt, Lou Saban, Herm Edwards, Rich Kotite and Art Shell were terrible but none compare with this guy who is a league of his own. I’m talking about the current ‘leader’ of the Buffalo Bills Chan Gailey who has set back any franchise that was foolish enough to hire him. Before I mention his most recent bone-head move with the Buffalo Bills I’ll go back to his days as Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. On one wonderful Sunday in Dallas the Cowboys were trailing by 11 points with 1:29 remaining before scoring a touchdown that cut the margin to five points. Gailey at this time decided to kick the extra-point to cut the margin to four points as opposed to going for two points where if they make the conversion would narrow the margin the three points where an on-side kick and field goal would tie the game. Then with only two time outs remaining he decided to kick off deep instead of trying for the on-sides kick and recovery as he still needed a touchdown. Needless to say the Cowboys never saw the ball again. In the post game interview Gailey when asked Gailey said he was aware that he need a touchdown to win and wasn’t concerned with kicking a field goal to tie.
This year on opening day Gailey was at it again in the final moments against the Miami Dolphins. Trailing (Of course) by three points with under two-minutes to play facing a third and 12 from his own 11 Gailey instructs then quarterback Trent Edwards to take an intentional safety to make the margin now five. Now, not only does he take the field goal out of play, but on the ‘Free Kick’ from the 20 he just punted the ball to the Dolphins who said ‘Thank you’ and gave the ball to the Bills with :09 seconds to go and 88 yards to go for a touchdown. Gailey plays to WIN!
New York Jets- Are they for real? They sure look good at home.
