Capel joins Duke as assistant by The Sports Network
Durham, NC (Sports Network) – Jeff Capel, formerly the head men’s basketball coach at Oklahoma, has joined the staff at Duke as an assistant.
Capel coached the Sooners to a 96-69 record over five seasons, a stint that included two NCAA Tournament appearances and a run to the Elite Eight in 2009. But he was fired in March after Oklahoma went 14-18, the team’s second consecutive losing season.
Capel, 36, was head coach at VCU for four seasons before moving to Oklahoma, and has an overall record of 175-110.
“We are excited to have Jeff joining our staff,” said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “He is an outstanding coach and will be a great fit in our program. Jeff has been a highly successful head coach at the Division I level and he will continue that here at Duke. Adding a coach of his caliber will make everyone in our program better.”
Capel played under Krzyzewski during his collegiate career in the mid-90s, and finished his Blue Devils career with 1,601 points, 433 assists and 220 three- point field goals. He was a four-year starter and helped Duke reach the national title game in 1994.
Also on Sunday, Duke named Nate James special assistant.
