Final Score: Washington 2, San Francisco 0

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Mike Morse and Jerry Hairston Jr. each knocked in a run to help back eight shutout innings from Tom Gorzelanny, as the Nationals edged San Francisco, 2-0, in the finale of a four-game set. Wilson Ramos went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Nationals, who won three games in the series. Gorzelanny (1-2) was sensational, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts. The left-hander threw 95 pitches — 62 for strikes — and did not issue a walk. Drew Storen worked a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season. Aaron Rowand had two hits for San Francisco, which has dropped eight of its last 11.

Final Score: Atlanta 6, Milwaukee 2

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) – Jair Jurrjens allowed just two runs in 7 2/3 innings and Alex Gonzalez knocked in three as the Atlanta Braves bested the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2, in the opener of a four-game set. Jurrjens (3-0) gave up seven hits and fanned four for the win. Gonzalez, in addition to dazzling with his glove, went 2-for-4 and scored a run. David Ross belted a home run, his third in the last two games. Yovani Gallardo (2-2) suffered the loss by allowing nine hits and five runs in five-plus frames for the Brewers, who have dropped three in a row. Yuniesky Betancourt accounted for both of Milwaukee’s runs with a two-out triple in the top of the fourth.

Final Score: Florida 6, St. Louis 5

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – Greg Dobbs’ eighth-inning sacrifice fly proved to be the difference, as the Florida Marlins narrowly edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, in the back-and-forth opener of a four-game series. Gaby Sanchez belted a grand slam for the Marlins, who have won three of their last four. Mike Stanton added a solo home run. Edward Mujica (3-1) earned the win after throwing two scoreless frames in relief. Lance Berkman went 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a three-run homer, for St. Louis, which has dropped its past two. Berkman is batting .406 on the season.

Final Score: Los Angeles 5, Chicago 2

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 28 games with an RBI single in the fifth to help the Los Angeles Dodgers take a 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game set. Ethier went just 1-for-4 in the game, but his single was good enough to move him within three games of tying Willie Davis’ 1969 record for the longest hit streak in Dodger history. Jerry Sands hit a two-run double and scored once while Juan Uribe and Ivan DeJesus both drove in a run for the Dodgers, who came into the game having lost four of six. Clayton Kershaw (3-3) gave up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over seven innings to earn the win. Alfonso Soriano hit a solo home run and Geovany Soto added an RBI double for the Cubs, who have dropped two straight and six of eight.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, San Diego 3

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) – Garrett Jones and Chris Snyder hit two-run homers in the first inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates held on for a 4-3 victory over San Diego in the opener of a three-game series. The Pirates, behind a good start from James McDonald, snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Padres. San Diego put runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth inning, but Joel Hanrahan got Will Venable on a fielder’s choice to end the game and get his ninth save. McDonald (2-2) worked five scoreless innings before giving up Jorge Cantu’s two-run homer in the sixth, his last inning. He yielded just five hits and one walk while striking out five.
