Final Score: Atlanta 103, Chicago 95
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) – Joe Johnson went 5-of-5 from beyond the arc en route to 34 points, as the Atlanta Hawks used a strong fourth quarter to take down the top-seeded Chicago Bulls, 103-95, in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Ex-Bull Jamal Crawford added 22 points off the bench for the fifth-seeded Hawks, who beat the Magic in six games to advance to the second round for the third consecutive season. Jeff Teague filled in for an injured Kirk Hinrich and scored 10 points for Atlanta, which outscored Chicago, 31-24, in the fourth quarter. Hinrich, who is also an ex-Bull, will likely miss the series after severely straining his hamstring in the clinching win over Orlando. Derrick Rose finished with 24 points and 10 assists for the Bulls, who needed five games to beat Indiana in the first round. This is Chicago’s second trip to the Eastern Conference semis since the club’s last NBA Championship in 1998. Adding injury to insult, Rose twisted his left ankle in the final seconds of the game. The MVP candidate stepped on the back of Crawford’s foot and came up limping, then walked gingerly into the locker room.
Final Score: Dallas 96, LA Lakers 94
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Dirk Nowitzki made two big free throws with 19.5 seconds remaining, as the Dallas Mavericks erased a 16-point deficit to beat the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, 96-94, in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Nowitzki ended with 28 points and 14 rebounds for the third-seeded Mavericks, who needed six games to beat Portland in the first round. Jason Terry added 15 points off the bench. Kobe Bryant finished with 36 points and five rebounds for the second-seeded Lakers, who defeated the Hornets in six games to advance. Pau Gasol donated 15 points and 11 boards, while Lamar Odom tallied 15 and 12 in defeat. The teams finished with identical 57-25 records during the regular season, but the Lakers won the season series, 2-1, to earn home-court advantage in the first playoff meeting between the teams since 1988. The Mavericks came into Monday’s game with an 0-10 mark on the road against the Lakers in the playoffs. Game 2 of the set will be Wednesday in LA.
