Road Warriors: 2011 by Rob Vinciletti

In this piece we will examine the unusual amount of road teams that have surprised their opponents with upset wins. We will also take a historical look at the NBA and NHL Playoffs to get a better understanding on the magnitude of these big wins. With Wins on Monday May second from Atlanta and Dallas, three of the four 2011 NBA Quarterfinals Game ones were won by the road team. Only two other times, in 1977 and in 1969, had as many as three of the four best-of-7 NBA second round Game ones been won by the road team. Never in any best-of-7 NBA Second round-series history have the road teams won all four Game ones. Proving just how hard it is for these road teams to go into a tough venue and come away with a win. The Dallas Mavericks were particularly impressive having won their first Game 1 in ten tries. Dallas Mavericks trailed the host L.A. Lakers by seven points after the third quarter. All time in the best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through 01 May 2011, road teams that were losing by seven points after three quarters had only an 11-75 game record. Good for a 12.8% win ratio. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Atlanta Hawks have a 5-0 series record upon winning Game 1; Atlanta will look to improve that record to 6-0 against the Chicago Bulls. Memphis on Sunday started things off with their unlikely win at Oklahoma City as a 6 point road dog. Miami was the only team to get a game 1 home win here in the second round. These results clearly show the parity in the NBA This season especially in the West.

In the NHL We have seen Similar results with road teams. In the first round we saw Montreal go into Boston and take the first two games of their series, only to have Boston come right back and take the next two on the road in Montreal. That particular set actually set up a solid game 5 situation where home teams all time in the NHL are 21-3 in Game 5 if the visitor won the first 4 games. Boston held the system true to form with their game five win. In the Second round we have seen More Road Warriors emerge. Tampa Bay has taken the first two games in Washington, while Boston has won their first two games in Philadelphia in a series rematch from last year where The Flyers were only the third team to ever come back from an 0-3 deficit. Game threes will be taking place later this week, stay tuned to see if these Road warriors continue to “Come Out and Play”.
