Warriors opt not to retain Smart as coach by The Sports Network

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) – The Golden State Warriors announced Wednesday that head coach Keith Smart will not be retained for the 2011-12 season.

Smart, 46, became the 23rd head coach in franchise history last September after Don Nelson stepped down from the position and guided the club to a 36-46 record.

“I think Keith did an admirable job this season and he should be commended for many of the positive things that transpired both on and off the floor,” said Warriors owner Joe Lacob. “The team showed improvement and their effort was never in question. However, we’ve elected to pursue a new path and we wish Keith the very best. He’s a quality person and we thank him for the time he invested with our organization.”

Smart served as an assistant coach with the club for seven seasons before his promotion. Prior to joining the Warriors for the 2003-04 campaign, the Louisiana native spent three seasons as an assistant in Cleveland, concluding his tenure there as interim head coach for the final 40 games of the 2002-03 season. The Cavaliers went 9-31 with him at the helm.
