If you are a streak player in baseball like I am you could have had a nice week betting.

The streaks were gold with the Rangers, Twins and Yanks winning three straight, Detroit four in a row and the Ultra hot Red Sox five consecutive victories, including a sweep on the Halos in L.A.

Also, the O’s, Royals, White Sox and Indians were each on a three-game losing streak, but Cleveland still clings to a slim lead in the AL Central in front of surging Tigers. Back to the Halos, they’ve dropped four in a row starting the week to fall 2½ games behind Texas in the West.

In the NL East, the Phils have won five straight games, including four on the road mostly with terrific pitching that figures to turn the division into a one horse race. Philly now plays a three-game series with the slumping Diamondbacks who have lost four straight.

Sitting in second place in the NL East are the Marlins who have won eight of their last 10. Somehow the Braves went into San Francisco and gained a three-game sweep, while the last place Mets have won their last four.

The NL Central is really a dogfight with the first place Cards winning seven of 10 in a division that is so tight the fifth place Pirates are just 2½ out of the lead.

In the NL West the Rockies have a nice 14-7 record, including a super 8-3 road mark. The Dodgers have moved into second place after the G-Men were swept at home. The D’backs and Padres look to be running as also rans.

The best teams on the road so far are the Phillies, Rockies and Angels. Texas at 10-2 is the top home team. The Rangers’ 4-5 road record is a figure we will be keeping track of for betting purposes.

I was disappointed with the Orioles this past week as they could not get a win at home against the Yankees and now must play the hot Red Sox. It’s a series I would not normally play, but I will continue to ride my bet on Boston. I’m standing by my earlier prediction that the Red Sox will go on a 10-game winning streak at some point.

Last week in my article I referred to Bob Feller as “Bullet Bob” and one of our readers said I was wrong, his nickname was “Rapid Robert.” That’s true, but he was also called “Bullet Bob” and “The Heater from Van Meter.”

I know the times are changing but they just don’t make pros like they did in my day. Feller grew up on an Iowa farm with his sister and both worked hard milking cows, picking corn and bailing hay. Once asked by a reporter how he gained arm strength, “Bullet Bob” told them it was from all those early days of milking, picking and baling hay.

His sister Marguerite was the Iowa state ping-pong champion and a very good hoops player in Iowa. The one thing I loved about Feller is he was the first Major League player to enlist after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Feller enlisted for combat on Dec. 8, 1941 and served as Gun Captain on the USS Alabama. He received five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars while missing four years of Major League baseball without as much as a whine. Nowadays you would almost never see an action like this.

Yes, the times they are a changing.

Derby at the turn

The wide open Kentucky Derby is almost here and this is one of the most evenly bunched mediocre 3-year-olds I have seen in a long time. Only one horse (The Factor) has a Beyer rating of 100, which came when he won the Rebel when getting an easy lead.

Uncle Mo, the horse that looked like the second coming of Seattle Slew, had his reputation tarnished in the Wood when losing to Toby’s Corner – a horse I picked to beat Mo at our Derby prep seminar at Palace Station.

Speaking of that seminar, don’t forget the big one is on deck Thursday, May 5 in the Palace Station race book with free food and cocktail service. The three of us (me, Ralph Siraco, Vic Vivio) will go over the race horse by horse. Don’t miss it; we have a great time. You just may get another Toby’s Corner. One thing you won’t get, as Siraco would say, is “the stinking chalk.”
