This is your Tuesday AM breakfast call where we review the past week in baseball, which has again produced the unlikely starts that make this sport so interesting and frustrating to bettors.
The Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals are at the top of AL Central standings. Boston and Tampa Bay are at the bottom of the AL East. Are you kidding me?
Nope.
Baltimore is leading the AL East and Albert Pujols is batting .130 for St. Louis.
Are you serious?Yep.
And here’s the most unbelievable stat of all – of the 10 games played Monday night, the visiting team won 9. It should have been all 10 had Toronto not blown a 7-0 lead late at Seattle, losing 8-7. The odds of visiting teams going perfect on the road on a particular day? Well, we heard a report that it hadn’t been done since 1890. Yes, 1890. The 19th century! No wonder our handicappers are struggling. Perhaps the world is flat and global warming is merely a state of mind.
I found a simple way of deducing how teams are doing and making a buck at the same time. It’s called a weekly runs contest, which also involved a 13-run payout. Each week from Monday through Sunday, I would enter a contest to determine which baseball teams would score the most runs and which would score the least. There would be 30 people involved and a drawing would be held to see what team a player would have each week.
Say you get the Minnesota Twins. If the Twins score the most runs, you win. If the Twins score the least runs, you win. And the first team to score 13 runs in a game that week wins a separate pot. If no teams scores 13, the money rolls over to the following week.
It was a very popular contest in bars back in New York where I grew up. I really don’t know why some sports book hasn’t picked up on this idea for a weekly parlay card..I think it would be a big summer hit. So while I go to local bars trying to pitch my idea, remember that if you are a Boston fan, the season is only 11 games in. Better to get that 2-8 start out of your system now. Look at it as a tsunami waiting to happen after the earthquake. Only nobody dies and many of us get rich off from Boston suddenly getting value on the board.
