Hofstra gives hoops coach Cassara a five-year deal by the Sports Network

Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) – Hofstra has rewarded men’s basketball coach Mo Cassara with a new five-year contract through the 2015-16 season.

Cassara took over in May of 2010, just days after Tim Welsh resigned following a DWI arrest. Welsh had been hired only a month earlier to replace Tom Pecora.

In his first season with the Pride, Cassara guided the program to a record of 21-12 with a 14-4 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra’s conference mark was two games better than VCU, which will play in the Final Four this weekend in Houston.

“Mo did an outstanding job this season in leading us to a second-place finish in arguably the greatest year in the Colonial Athletic Association’s history,” said Hofstra athletic director Jack Hayes. “He has proven his abilities as a coach and as a recruiter, and we’re very excited about the program’s future under his leadership.”

Cassara spent four years as an assistant at Boston College and had served as the head coach at Division III Clark University for two years. He also had a one-year stint as an assistant at Dayton in 2003-04.
