Purdue signs Painter to new 8-year deal by the Sports Network
West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) – Matt Painter is not only staying at Purdue, he has agreed to a new eight-year deal to coach the Boilermakers through the 2018-19 season.
“At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue,” Painter said in a statement, “and this is a place where I want to win a national championship.”
The new contract, announced Wednesday, came after Painter reportedly met with Missouri about its vacancy as head men’s basketball coach. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Painter also signed an eight-year extension with Purdue last April.
“We are thrilled,” athletics director Morgan Burke said about the new deal.
Painter guided Purdue to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10 and the program is one of just eight nationwide to win at least 25 games in each of the last four seasons.
The Boilermakers went 26-8 this past season, earning a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But they were upset in the round of 32 by Final Four-bound Virginia Commonwealth.
Painter said he was excited to continue his career at Purdue and that there was more to accomplish.
“Our program is built on hard work, and we are ready to get back to improving as a team and a staff,” he said.
Painter, who graduated from Purdue in 1994, became its head coach for the 2005-06 season after one year as head coach at Southern Illinois and another as an associate coach with the Boilermakers.
