Well we have all been aware of the fact that visibly Mike Vick is not going to be playing anymore this season for the Eagles. Handing 23 year old Nick Foles the starting job at QB here on out for the season.
Foles looked solid in his games he played, throwing for over 700 YDs. Foles did show some good accuracy and made excellent decisions when he played. The Eagles are allowing him chuck the ball around, and then, of course the coming out of Bryce Brown at RB raises more eyebrows, unexpectedly a huge double threat option with 2 starters not in the game.
Philly won’t dump off this kid; Vick is to be expected, to be the one going elsewhere at the end of the season. The Eagles will use the rest of the season to determine what they have in Nick Foles at the QB position. This also gives them a good solid 4 more games to play and see what he can do out on the field. With games coming up including Tampa, Washington and Cincinnati, he plays teams with some weak pass coverage, which could be a confidence booster.
Will the QB change to Foles make the team a bit more competitive? They appear to be. And he has done it by and large without the big hitter DeSean Jackson on down the field plays.
Jeffrey Lurie, the owner of the Eagles, had already said 8-8 doesn’t cut it with the talent the team has. Sadly for Philly fans the 2012 season already is shot down as a sub .500 season, and I am sure that heads will roll at the end of the experiment of the “dream team – turned nightmare.”
I believe a huge factor in Vick’s future is his health. Particularly, the fact that the Eagles have said that even if Vick was cleared, it’s Foles job as the starter now. We have seen what Vick can do, 19 turnovers and an insignificant performance overall on the season. Teams must go with what works for the team, who gives the best chance of winning the game, is always the most important question to ask. A player is always only 1-2 hits away from losing his job in the NFL.
Michael Vick brings major risks to any team that would sign him. Concussion problems and all the hits he has taken causes very serious concerns for any team that would consider making him their starting QB. Now of course, is Vick going to be the only one leaving Philly? Extremely improbable, as I would certainly put Andy Reid’s head on the chopping block as well and probably other coaching staff, as well as a few O-linemen too, they need a complete overhaul on the team, it’s time to move forward in the rebuilding process.
Now with the team with only 1 genuine superstar, in RB LeSean McCoy, who still hadn’t gotten the ball as much as he should have per game. McCoy on the season with 985 total yards and an estimated 21 touches/game is certainly good. But, once healthy, I would get him the ball 25-29 touches/game; he could potentially be an 1800 YD, 23 TD scrimmage back.
It’s time to get prepped for 2013, and with no monster names in 2013 QB draft class, I think it makes the decision that much more uncomplicated. Vick will likely get a starting job elsewhere next year, in particular, built off of the weak QB draft class in 2013. He does have the experience, and we know his body of work already. But as stated earlier, his risks are huge. The fact is taking him as a solution is difficult to believe in. with an insipid W/L record of 18-15 in the last 4 seasons. His career numbers of only 1 season passing better than 60% and only twice passing for 20+ TDs in a season don’t make him a sensible future solution for most teams. It’s time to accept that Vick is not an answer anymore; his best years are behind him, perhaps running the wildcat for some team as a backup.
