New England Patriots
The Patriots fell one game short of winning another Super Bowl title losing to the New York Giants. Despite the disappointing loss New England had another successful season in 2011. Tom Brady threw for 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns. The tight end duo of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski was the best in the NFL in 2011. Wide receiver Wes Welker hauled in 122 passes for 1,569 yards and 9 touchdowns. The running game in 2011 was more of a compliment than strength. The defense was solid but it lacked the big play element in crucial situations.
For the Patriots to win the Super Bowl in 2012 the running game must be a strength. Steven Ridley will be the new starter he gained 441 yards in a backup role in 2011. The defense added some athleticism with the drafting of defensive end Chandler Jones and linebacker Donta Hightower. The offense is there for the Patriots to make another return trip to the Super Bowl but the defense must come up with big plays or New England will fall short again.
The 2011 Bills finished with a 6-10 record in 2011. Buffalo got off to a decent start but faded down the stretch to miss the playoffs once again. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 24 touchdowns and 3,832yards but he also had 23 interceptions. Wide receiver Steve Johnson had a breakout season in 2011. He had 76 catches for 1,004 yards. Running back Fred Jackson had 934 yards and 6 touchdowns. The problem for the Bills was on defense. They could only generate 29 sacks last season.
In the off season Buffalo signed Houston Texans free agent defensive end Mario Williams to a new contract. He alone will make the Bills defense better. The Bills also signed free agent defense end Mark Anderson from New England. He had 10 sacks in 2011. For the Bills to make the jump to the playoffs Anderson and Williams must put heat on the opposing quarterbacks and on offense Fitzpatrick must cut down on his interceptions.
The Jets really took a step backwards in 2011 finishing 8-8 and it was because of the offense. New York’s offense finished 25th in the NFL. Quarterback Mark Sanchez was inconsistent all season his stats were not bad 3,474 yards and 26 touchdowns but in crucial situations he could not come up with the big play. Shonn Greene rushed for 1,054 yards but he like Sanchez did not come up with the big play on a consistent basis. Santonio Holmes had a down season he caught 51 passes in 2011. The top receiver was tight end Dustin Keller; he had 65 catches for 815 yards. The Jet defense was solid in 2011 finishing fifth overall in the NFL.
New York traded for quarterback Tim Tebow in the off season and new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano will put in a new “Wildcat” package for him in 2012. The Jets hope this new package will put some life into the offense. For the Jets to return to the playoffs in 2012 Mark Sanchez has to come up big and Santonio Holmes and Dustin Keller must have Pro Bowl type seasons. During the pre season the offensive line performed poorly and could be a problem. The defense will be good again in 2012 but it will need help from an improved offense to shoulder the load this season.
The Dolphins started the season 0-7 but won 6 of their last 9 games to finish 6-10. The finish was not good enough to save Coach Tony Sparano his job. He was replaced by former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin has a low key no nonsense coaching style. Running back Reggie Bush had his best year as a pro in 2011. He rushed for 1,086 yards and had 43 receptions. Quarterback Matt Moore performed well in the second half of the season. Top receiver Brandon Marshall who had 81 catches was traded to Chicago in the off season. The defense finished 15th in the NFL in 2011. During the 6-3 finish the Miami defense held 6 opponents under 20 points.
Miami has decided to rebuild. They will start first round pick Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. The wide receiver position is a mess. Chad Johnson was cut during training camp because of an off field incident. He was being counted on to provide some veteran leadership. The offensive line gave up 52 sacks in 2011 and must improve. The offense is going to struggle in 2012 the defense finished strong in 2011 and will have to shoulder the load until the offense can get going. It looks like a long season in Miami.
