According to a report from MLB.com, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure Thursday.
Pitchers typically need a year to recover from the procedure, so Chamberlain will miss the rest of this season and likely part of 2012 as well.
The surgery was expected after Chamberlain was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow Thursday. The injury was originally called a strained muscle, but an MRI exam revealed the extent of the damage.
Chamberlain, who was 2-0 with a 2.83 ERA in 27 appearances before going on the DL, didn’t allow a run over his last eight appearances.
The 25-year-old setup man, once projected as a top-of-the-rotation starter, is in his fifth major league season, all with the Yankees.
