Maple Leafs re-sign G Reimer for 3 years by The Sports Network
The team announced the deal Thursday, with general manager Brian Burke saying the 23-year-old netminder had earned a chance to play in the NHL.
Reimer went 20-10-5 for the Maple Leafs in 2011 after being called up from the AHL and thrust into a goaltending situation that was in flux due to injuries.
“He earned the opportunity to play at the NHL level this past season and he made the most of it with his outstanding play,” Burke said in a statement. “He really grabbed the net and never looked back.”
Veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere started 33 games for Toronto, but missed stretches of time because of a groin injury and went 11-11-4. Jonas Gustavsson underwent heart surgery again in February and was 6-13-2 before he was placed on injured reserve.
Reimer played in 37 games, all but one of them coming from January 1 on, and posted a 2.60 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in his first NHL season.
He also played for Canada at the IIHF World Championship in Slovakia and went 3-0-0 with a 2.04 goals against average and .920 save percentage in four games.
“We are confident that his talent and strong work habits will be contributing factors to our team’s success next season,” Burke said.
