Joba has tear, could miss rest of season by The Sports Network

Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain has a torn ligament in his right elbow, not a strained muscle, and could miss the rest of the season.

An MRI revealed the extent of the injury that — originally deemed a strained flexor muscle in his throwing arm — had landed Chamberlain on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Speaking before Thursday’s game against the Red Sox, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Chamberlain’s season was likely over and that he will probably have Tommy John surgery.

Chamberlain, who was 2-0 with a 2.83 ERA in 27 appearances before going on the DL, didn’t allow a run over his last eight appearances.

The 25-year-old setup man, once projected as a top-of-the-rotation starter, is in his fifth major league season, all with the Yankees.
