One of my New Year’s wishes is that at this time next year, we’re anxiously awaiting the NFL playoffs. But there is a very good chance that won’t be the case.
Imagine Hurricane Katrina hitting Las Vegas. That’s how much of a hit this city would take if the NFL returned to replacement games.
“It would be the worst possible case for the books,” said Jay Kornegay when we first discussed this situation a few weeks back. “Without question, NFL is king in Las Vegas.”
Mike Colbert, race and sports manager at the M Resort, said it’s still a little premature to think about a lockout but it could potentially be devastating later in the year.
“It would hurt us tremendously if the strike went on through November and December, our busiest months. In a month or so, we will get more detail. There’s no guarantee there will be one.”
While we all hope for a rational solution, the looming 2011 NFL lockout appears likely. NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith told ESPN, “I still feel that a lockout is coming in March.”
According to Yahoo.com, the most likely scenario in this 2011 NFL lockout would be that the league basically shuts down until a new labor agreement is reached. The owners want an 18-game regular season schedule, a rookie wage scale and increased drug testing.
We could see a radical shift toward college football wagering with the networks shifting a number of games to Sunday and Monday for ratings. Until this mess is settled, this will be the dominant story in 2011.
So Tiger, you are off the hook.
