Financial terms were not disclosed by the club, but the Post Dispatch reported it is worth $13.75 million. Polak is in line to receive $2 million for the upcoming season, $2.45 in 2012-13 and $3.1 million for the final three seasons, according to the paper.
“We believe Roman is one of the top defensive defensemen in the league who plays against the opposing teams’ best players night after night,” said Blues executive vice president and general manager Doug Armstrong. “He’s one of our top penalty killers who is just reaching the prime of his career, and we’re happy to have him in the fold for the next five years.”
The 25-year-old tallied three goals and 12 points in 55 games for St. Louis last season, one which was shortened due to a severed tendon in his right wrist.
A former sixth-round pick in 2004, Polak has recorded eight goals and 49 points in 227 NHL games, all with the Blues since 2006.
