Campbell to relinquish role as NHL disciplinarian by The Sports Netork

Colin Campbell will step down from his role as the National Hockey League’s disciplinarian, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced on Wednesday.

Campbell, who has served as the league’s discipline czar since July 1998, will no longer hold that position, but he will not be giving up his role as league vice president and director of hockey operations.

The 58-year-old played 12 seasons in the WHA and NHL as a defenseman, making the Stanley Cup Finals with the Canucks in 1982. He later served as head coach of the New York Rangers from 1994-98 before moving up to the league office.

He will be replaced by Brendan Shanahan, who currently serves as the NHL’s vice president of hockey and business development.

Shanahan has also served on the league’s competition committee, which most recently overhauled the All-Star Game format from conference-based selections to one where captains choose sides.

The 42-year-old played more than 1,500 NHL games from 1987-2009, scoring 656 goals and racking up 1,354 points.
