Giants C Posey likely done for season by The Sports Network

Giants catcher Buster Posey has a fractured fibula and torn ligaments in his left ankle and could miss the remainder of the season.

The team is most concerned about the torn ligaments, Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner said on Thursday.

“This is probably more a football-type injury, a contact injury,” Groeschner said, describing Posey’s MRI results in a solemn press conference after the Giants lost 1-0 to the Marlins.

Posey, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year and an important cog in San Francisco’s World Series win, was injured in a collision at home plate Wednesday night when Scott Cousins knocked him over to score Florida’s go- ahead run in the 12th inning.

Posey’s left leg bent awkwardly under his body and he laid on the ground in pain before being helped off the field. The play has led to some discussion of whether or not to ban home plate collisions.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Posey was in pain and “very down” about his injury.

“I hate to say (he’s) distraught, but…he has taken this pretty hard,” said Bochy. “He knows it’s pretty serious. With what’s going on, he’s doing as well as you can be.”

The Giants placed Posey on the 15-day disabled list among a slew of other moves before Thursday’s loss, which gave the Marlins a sweep of the three-game series. He will be out at least 6-to-8 weeks.

“It’s going to be a long road,” said Bochy.

Posey was batting .284 with four homers and 21 runs batten in this season. Last year, he hit .305 with 18 home runs and 67 RBI over 108 games.
