NFL adjusts rules for defenseless players by The Sports Network

The NFL has made adjustments to rules regarding defenseless players and blows to the heads of quarterbacks.

According to the NFL Network, a defenseless player will be regarded as one that has not yet had a chance to defend himself from a hit. In the past, a receiver who had made a catch and came down with two feet was fair game for a defensive player, but now the receiver will be protected until he becomes a runner.

As far as hits to the heads of quarterbacks, the NFL Network reported that the “grazing” blow by a defensive player will now be a judgment call by the officials. Any contact with the quarterback’s helmet in recent years had been an automatic penalty.

Also, the NFL Network reports that there has been a more comprehensive definition of a player who “launches” toward another.

NFL owners are meeting in Indianapolis and the rules adjustments were reportedly approved by a unanimous 32-0 vote.
