Celtic Pride: Rivers agrees to five-year extension by The Sports Network

Boston, MA (Sports Network) – Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge announced Friday that Doc Rivers has agreed to a five-year contract extension to remain Boston’s head coach.

Rivers’ new pact, reportedly worth $35 million, will keep him in Boston through the 2015-16 season.

The 49-year-old Rivers just completed his seventh season with the Celtics, guiding the club to their fourth consecutive Atlantic Division crown with a 56-26 record. Boston was ousted in the Eastern Conference semifinals in five games by Miami after dispatching New York in a four-game sweep.

Rivers, who led Boston to its 17th NBA championship in the spring of 2008 and to the Finals last season, has compiled a record of 336-238 since being named to the position on April 29, 2004.

A 13-year NBA veteran, Rivers also coached the Orlando Magic for four-plus seasons. He posted a mark of 171-168 with the Magic, leading the club to three playoff appearances in his first four seasons, but was fired after the team started 1-10 during the 2003-04 campaign.
